Sukhpal Khaira is an MLA from Bhulath seat in Kapurthala district of Punjab. He won the 2017 assembly election by contesting on the Aam Aadmi Party ticket. In March 2017, HS Phoolka was made Leader of Opposition by the Aam Aadmi Party. But he quit shortly after, citing a focus on the 1984 Sikh riots. Phoolka also resigned from the party on 3 January 2019. When Phoolka left the post of Leader of the Opposition, Khaira was entrusted with the responsibility by the Aam Aadmi Party. Khaira was soon removed from the post of Leader of the Opposition due to differences with Kejriwal and the party high command. About 6 months later, on 6 January 2019, he resigned from the Aam Aadmi Party. Two days after his resignation, Khaira announced the formation of a new party by the name of Punjab Ekta Party.
