Less than a year is left for the Punjab Assembly Elections 2022. In the 2017 elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) made a loud noise. However, in the results, the party did not achieve the desired success. The party is once again engaged in preparations for 2022. Meanwhile, Sukhpal Singh Khaira, the tall leader, is now joining the Congress. Although he left Arvind Kejriwal two years ago. In such a situation, due to his new move, the political stir in Punjab has intensified.
Sukhpal Khaira is an MLA from Bhulath seat in Kapurthala district of Punjab. He won the 2017 assembly election by contesting on the Aam Aadmi Party ticket. In March 2017, HS Phoolka was made Leader of Opposition by the Aam Aadmi Party. But he quit shortly after, citing a focus on the 1984 Sikh riots. Phoolka also resigned from the party on 3 January 2019. When Phoolka left the post of Leader of the Opposition, Khaira was entrusted with the responsibility by the Aam Aadmi Party. With this, the importance and status of Sukhpal Khaira can be gauged within the party.
Khaira was soon removed from the post of Leader of the Opposition due to differences with Kejriwal and the party high command. About 6 months later, on 6 January 2019, he resigned from the Aam Aadmi Party. Two days after his resignation, Khaira announced the formation of a new party by the name of Punjab Ekta Party. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Punjab Ekta Party fielded candidates for three of the 13 seats in the state. Bathinda, Faridkot and Khadur Sahib.
Arvind Kejriwal had made several allegations against Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Majithia on the issue of drug mafia in Punjab. But in March 2018, when he gave an apology for the rhetoric made on Majithia in the court of Amritsar, there was a political earthquake in Punjab. The very next day the party's Punjab unit president Bhagwant Mann resigned. Sukhpal Khaira and MLA Kanwar Sandhu raised questions about Kejriwal's apology. However, it is also quite interesting that Khaira left the party in 2019 due to speculation of alliance with Congress and Aam Aadmi Party. Now he stands with the same Congress.
On 8 March, Khaira supported the farmers in a tweet. He wrote in the tweet, 'Our women farmers are our strength. She has been sitting in protests along with men for the past three months. They also know how these laws will affect their lives. Their presence in protest gives us dual power. ' A day later, the ED raided his eight locations in Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab. The search operation was carried out in the drugs, money laundering and fake passport gang cases. Questioning this action, senior advocate RS Bains had said that raids were conducted to target those supporting the farmer movement against the three new agricultural laws.
Before the assembly elections in Punjab, the difficulties for Kejriwal are increasing. Leaders like Phoolka, Khaira and Doctor Dharamvir Gandhi have left him. Since the 2017 assembly elections, the party has not conducted any major agitation in Punjab. In contrast, the party has had to contend with infighting and breakdown. Several leaders have left the party targeting Kejriwal over the issue of autonomy of the Punjab unit. In the 2017 election, Kejriwal campaigned vigorously on prohibition and local problems. The party then had 20 seats out of 117. But this time the Aam Aadmi Party seems to be missing from the state scenario. In such a situation, the road to Punjab is becoming difficult for Kejriwal and his party.
