- In Gujarat, a 45-year-old cyclist laborer was handed a challan for walking in the wrong direction.
- Interestingly, the challan referred to the motor vehicle act instead of the Gujarat Police Act.
- The offense of dangerous driving was written under section 184 of the Motor Act in the challan of the migrant laborer
While hundreds of commuters break traffic rules fearlessly every day, a 45-year-old cyclist in Gujarat was handed a challan for walking in the wrong direction. The incident occurred on National Highway 53 on Thursday. The migrant laborer Rajbahadur Yadav works in a textile unit in Surat. A traffic policeman cut off his challan at the Gbhani intersection on the highway.
Interestingly, the challan referred to the motor vehicle act instead of the Gujarat Police Act. The challan records the offense of dangerous driving under section 184 of the Motor Act. Senior police officers later confessed to adding the wrong section in the challan. Raj Bahadur Yadav said, 'I was going to work on a cycle near Gabhani intersection when the traffic police stopped me. They cut my challan and asked me to go to court and fill it.
'I don't know how serious my crime is'
Raj Bahadur is originally from UP and lives with his family in Pandesara. He gets Rs 400 per day. Rajbahadur says, 'I don't know how serious my crime is but I have to take a day off from work to fill the challan. I do not even know if a challan can be deducted in this way. '
Stringent action to prevent serious accidents on the road
On the other hand, the police claim that a cyclist has been fined for preventing a serious accident on this road. Traffic police officials said cycling in the wrong direction is punishable. Assistant Commissioner, Traffic HD Mevra said, "Under the Gujarat Police Act, a bicycle cannot cycle in the wrong direction and can also be fined."
