For the last three months, there is peace along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. India and Pakistan agreed in February to strictly adhere to all ceasefire agreements along the LoC and other areas. Army Chief General MM Naravane has said that the ceasefire between the two armies has promoted the attitude of peace and security. This is the first step in a long way towards normalizing relations between the two neighboring countries.
Referring to the ceasefire, General Narwane said that after the agreement came into force, there was not a single incident of cross-border firing from both the armies. However, there was an incident involving Pakistani Rangers in the Jammu sector.
He said, 'This year we have seen a drastic reduction in the level of violence in Jammu and Kashmir. Security forces and other government agencies are working to maintain pressure on terrorist groups.
Fight against terrorism continues
Naravane said such a ceasefire does not mean that India's fight against terrorism has stopped. There is no reason to believe that the terrorist infrastructure along the LoC has been dismantled by the Pakistan Army.
According to the Army Chief, the continuation in reduction of infiltration attempts and terrorist incidents in Jammu and Kashmir will assure India of Pakistan's intention to promote good neighborly relations.
peace by observance of ceasefire agreement
General Narwane said that the observance of the ceasefire agreement had 'definitely' contributed to the overall vision of peace and security in the region. The prospects for an atmosphere of peace in the region have strengthened.
The army chief said, “The ceasefire on the LoC does not mean that our fight against terrorism has come to an end. We have no reason to believe that the Pakistan Army has dismantled the terror infrastructure along the LoC.
Referring to the US administration's decision to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan by September 11, the army chief said, "whether their incompetence or unwillingness, both are equally alarming and worrying."
