New Delhi
Congress has attacked the central government. The Central Government has recalled Alapan Bandopadhyay, Chief Secretary of West Bengal. Terming this as an attack on democracy and cooperative federalism, the Congress said on Saturday that such a move would lead to anarchy. The party's chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala also questioned why the decision was made to withdraw Bandopadhyay only four days after extending the service for three months?

attack on modi government
"The malicious and arbitrary recall of the Chief Secretary of West Bengal by the Modi government has shocked the consciousness of the entire nation," he said in a statement. It is even more serious in the sense that four days ago it was the Modi government that gave the Chief Secretary an extension of three months.

'Attack on democracy and federalism'
Surjewala alleged that the Centre's move was an attack on democracy and cooperative federalism and such a move would lead to anarchy in the country. He said, 'This is a serious attack on the Constitution of the country and cooperative federalism. If the central government is allowed to recall All India Service officers from different states on a party basis, the entire structure of law and order and the Constitution will collapse.

Surjewala asked, "Will the Prime Minister and the Department of Personnel and Training reveal why the Chief Secretary was called back after four days of extension?" The Congress general secretary claimed that with the steps of the central government, it appears that it wants to topple the recently elected Trinamool Congress government.

He said that Congress calls upon all jurists, constitutional experts, public representatives and every countryman to condemn the attack on India's constitutional fabric and federal structure. Significantly, just four days after West Bengal Chief Secretary Alapan Bandopadhyay was given extension, the Center on Friday night sought his services and asked the state government to relieve the officer immediately. The ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal termed the move as 'forced deputation'.
